The strategy for managing performance out of the office should be
largely the
same as for managing performance in the office. To detect performance
problems, collect information on a continuous basis from a number of
sources: coworkers, customers, work products you've reviewed and the remote worker. Ask for feedback rather than waiting for information to be
volunteered. Here are strategies for delivering constructive feedback.
Be sure to set at least weekly check-in calls or ongoing work
discussions that cover progress, concerns and development issues
Give feedback in a timely way, and try to give frequent,
positive comments.
Give especially critical feedback in person rather than by telephone.
Link feedback to a specific event/task and be direct with
the recipient.
Focus onbehavior, combining observation with suggestions for
improvement.
