FWA Training:  Isolations and Distractions
Previous Next

While managers are charged with managing remote workers, remote workers have to self-manage, too. They need to find ways to avoid isolation and distractions.

Isolation:
You might not expect the independent, self-sufficient employees who make good remote workers to feel isolated while working at home, but this has been identified in surveys as a common problem among remote workers, especially new ones. Here’s a checklist of things you might miss when working at home:

Informal conversations that provide inside information.

The feeling of belonging to a group.

A way to casually share things you’re doing without making a big deal about them.

Rituals around starting and ending your work day such as driving to the office or buying the newspaper.

Socializing – having lunch or coffee with colleagues and friends.

Instant feedback from your manager and colleagues.

The opportunity to give and receive support in times of crisis.
