While
managers are charged with managing remote workers, remote workers have to
self-manage, too. They need to find ways to avoid isolation and
distractions.
Isolation: You might not expect the independent, self-sufficient
employees who make good remote workers to feel isolated while working at
home, but this has been identified in surveys as a common problem among remote workers, especially new ones. Here’s a checklist of things you
might miss when working at home:
Informal
conversations that provide inside information.
The
feeling of belonging to a group.
A
way to casually share things you’re doing without making a big
deal about them.
Rituals around starting and ending your work day such as driving
to the office or buying the newspaper.
Socializing – having lunch or coffee with colleagues and
friends.
Instant feedback from your manager and colleagues.
The opportunity to give and receive support in times of crisis.
